Professor Chen Tsai has been appointed Chancellor's Professor. This title is among the highest academic distinctions on our campus - just twenty other UCI faculty have been so honored. The title of Chancellor's Professor recognizes the field-leading contributions of Chen over his career and his status as an intellectual leader in the area of optical signal processing, micro- and nanoscale integration, and magnetic and ultrasonic materials and devices. ISIS members will take an extra measure of pride in Chen's award because he is also a founding member of the Institute, which is entering its twentieth year. |

November: Congratulations to Kieron Burke, who was elected APS fellow by the Division of Condensed Matter Physics , "For his seminal contributions to the development and application of the density functional theory of ground and excited electronic states, and electronic dynamics in condensed matter." This is limited to no more than ½% of the members. |
| October:
We are pleased to announce that Don Blake, Rob Corn, Scott
Rychnovsky, and A. J. Shaka
have been awarded the distinction of Fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Congratulations! [ link ] |
| Chen
Tsai, Professor of
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and ISIS founding
member, was recently
bestowed the 2007 Distinguished
Alumnus Award of National
Taiwan University ( NTU ) for Research Achievement. NTU, founded in 1928, is the most prestigious academic institution in Taiwan. Chen was recognized for his seminal contributions in Integrated Optics and Ultrasonics science and technology, and was honored at the University Anniversary Celebration on Nov. 15. There were three awardees in the category of scholarly research achievement. Dr. Tsai was the awardee in the areas of Applied Science and Engineering. The other two are in Physical Sciences and Laws, respectively. Dr. Tsai served as the Founding Director of Institute for Applied Science and Engineering of Academia Sinica there in 1999, and returned to full-time teaching and research at UCI in 2002. |
| Zuzanna
Siwy, ISIS member and Assistant
Professor of Physics, has been awarded with the prestigious Sloan
Research Fellowship as reported
in the Daily
Pilot. Congratulations Zuzanna! |
| Kenneth J. Shea
Wins American Chemical Society Award Kenneth J. Shea, chemistry professor, has received a 2007 Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society. Shea conducted his postdoctoral research with Robert G. Bergman at California Institute of Technology before joining UCI's faculty, where he has been teaching chemistry for more than 30 years. Shea's research areas include synthetic organic, polymer and materials chemistry. For more details, please visit the American Chemical Society website: |

From uci.news, September/October 2006 ................................................................................... Three ISIS members have been honored as a triumvirate by UCI's Academic Senate with 2006-07 Distinguished Faculty Awards for their significant contributions to teaching, research and university service. Their awards, the highest honor senate faculty members can receive from their colleagues, will be presented on Thursday, November 2, 2006 at the University Club at 7 p.m. The honored group will speak. A reception hosted by chancellor Michael V. Drake follows the awards ceremony. The three team members are: V. Ara Apkarian, professor and chair of chemistry; Kenneth C. Janda, professor of Chemistry; and Peter Taborek, professor of physics and astronomy - winning the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. ................................................................................... Professor John C. Hemminger, ISIS member and founding director, was appointed Dean of Physical Sciences, effective July 1, 2006. We are very pleased that Professor Hemminger will continue as an active ISIS member, and look forward to a continuing excellent relationship with him as Physical Sciences dean.
