The Department of Physics and
Astronomy of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) has created an
outstanding environment within which to pursue an advanced degree in
physics and related fields. We have assembled, and are continuing to
assemble, a faculty of outstanding educators and first-rate researchers
in several fields of physics and astronomy. We have strong programs,
not only in the core areas of particles, plasmas, condensed matter, and
astronomy, but in such interdisciplinary fields as biological, chemical
and medical physics.
Founded in 1965, the Department is old enough to be have had some major
accomplishments (as the late Professor Frederick Reines' 1995 Nobel
Prize so eloquently attests), but young enough to be forward-looking.
We were among the first major physics departments in the country to
incorporate modern computational methods into the regular curriculum.
We have created theory groups in cosmology and particles that are
highly interactive. We have developed a condensed matter program of
quality and breath. The theory and experimental particle activities are
mutually supportive and highly interactive. The plasma research program
contains complementary theory and experimental activities. In addition
we are situated in a rapidly growing, high-tech area, which contributes
to a research-friendly environment. When you add this intellectual
environment to the physical environment with its attributes of an
unsurpassed year-round climate, beautiful surroundings, and close
proximity to the Pacific Ocean, we believe the combination is close to
ideal.
