Fellowships Available to U. C. Irvine Physics & Astronomy Graduate Students

During their first year of study, graduate students are typically provided stipends, tuition and fee fellowships, and/or Teaching Assistantships. In subsequent years, students typically receive support through Research Assistantships once they begin their doctoral research.  Listed below are some of the sources of financial support for entering and continuing graduate students at UCI.   For more informaiton regarding financial support, please visit the Office of Graduate Studies website.

Teaching Assistantship

These awards require up to 20 hours of teaching service per week. The award currently pays a nine-month stipend of approximately $14,600.  Teaching assistantships for the summer months are also available.   Please visit the Office of Graduate Studies Teaching Assistantships website for more information.


Research Assistantship

These awards pay the stipend of students who are pursuing doctoral dissertation research. The current twelve-month stipend starts at approximately $18,400.

The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) / National Science Foundation (NSF) summer research program for study in India.

The program will begin on June 10, 2009 for eight weeks and is open to US graduate students enrolled in any discipline of astronomy or astrophysics.

Fellowship Competition  - UCI Graduate Division (contact for application:  Rachel Kaufman).

One award will be awarded every other year to graduates of Indian and Pakistani universities in the Punjab region. Applicants must be currently pursuing a graduate degree at any campus of the University of California. Preference will be given to students who have reached the dissertation stage. Must be nominated by the Graduate Division.  Applicants must be committed to returning to his or her country of origin after receiving the degree, and not have engaged previously in graduate study at any other institute of higher learning in the United States.

No citizenship requirements.  
Stipend of $26,000 per academic year.  
Brython Davis Fellowship

One of the applicant's parents must currently be, or have been, a regular member of either the United States Navy or Marine Corps

La Verne Noyes Fellowship

Lawrence Fellowship (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory)
early Nov Must be within one year of receiving Ph.D.   Employment may not start until Ph.D. requirements have been verified, or have received their Ph.D. degree within five years of being hired as a Lawrence Fellow.
Starting salary: $8,092 per month
The National Physical Science Consortium is inviting applications for graduate fellowships. early Nov NPSC welcomes applications from any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution (UCI is a member institution).

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship
