...................................................................................................................................... Welcome to our new Director! The Institute of Surface and Interface Science (ISIS) is pleased to announce that Prof. Peter Taborek of the Department of Physics and Astronomy has been appointed as director, beginning September 1, 2008. Peter Taborek succeeds Prof. Reginald M. Penner, who is stepping down after a three year tenure as Director. Professor Taborek assumes the position of Director with the unanimous support of ISIS faculty. He is a low temperature experimental physicist who has done seminal research on the use of superfluid helium to study surface phase transitions, hydrodynamic singularities, the origin of friction at the atomic level and related matters. Professor Taborek is a long standing member of ISIS and has taken an active interest in the affairs of the Institute. Most importantly he was a key figure in the founding of the graduate concentration "Chemical and Materials Physics" (ChaMP), and for the first few years of the existence of the program he was very active in its management and administration. Taborek is also the author of "The Mathematica Handbook." Under Professor Penner's leadership, ISIS has had its focus, nanoscience, clearly defined and delineated. New interdisciplinary research thrusts were initiated, a research infrastructure was developed, and the research of ISIS members was "vertically integrated". ISIS has grown to 30 faculty members, from the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Developmental and Cell Biology, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Thus, Professor Taborek is inheriting a very dynamic and active interdisciplinary campus group devoted to nanoscience in a broad sense. ...................................................................................
