Life in the Lab

Sidney Harris cartoonWelcome to my home page! Here you'll find information about my research, teaching, and other side projects. Each topic has its own page so navigation should be easy. Since these pages are always being modified and improved, I'm interested in any feedback you may be willing to offer. There is a "mailto:" at the bottom of each page which you can use to send me your comments.

At this point you be wondering just who the heck is this person and why should I bother looking at his pages? Well, let me hit the (possibly) high points about me. First and foremost, I'm a grad student in the physics department at UC Irvine. Specifically, I live in the basement of one of the physical sciences buildings where I do low temperature physics. The blurb about my research reads- I'm currently working with liquid helium in order to find new phase transitions in two dimensional He films. I examine the behavior of the films on various surfaces such as cesium, rubidium, and hydrogen. These surfaces produce different phases in the He films when compared to the traditional gold, copper, etc. surfaces. Interested in learning more about the physics or experimental techniques? Check out my research page and the links to our group web page.

One of my other primary interests is teaching physics. Over the years I have come to believe that guiding others through their physics journey is very rewarding. Not only have I worked as a teaching assistant at UCI, I also serve as the department's TA Consultant. This allows me to assist the other TAs as well as improve my own teaching skills. I hope to find a job that allows me to achieve a balance of research and teaching. Again, I have a separate page discussing my current and future teaching goals. Also, you might want to look at my CV which has some of the details of my work experience.

So how do I spend my free time? Certainly playing around on the computers would have to be included on the list. I enjoy working with my Mac (yes, a Macintosh!). Also, I've been trying to improve my programming skills. I took a C++ course here at UCI where we had to build a library as a final project. My circuit simulator is on-line, with a fair amount of documentation. It's nothing spectacular as it was my first "real" C++ project, but it was enough to give me a taste of the language.

That's about it for now; thanks again for stopping by!

Jeff
