Web Information:  This document and other information about this course may be found at:
  http://www.physics.uci.edu/~mbander/P5B/P5B.html
Office Hours: Mondays, 11-12.  In addition, weather permitting, on Mondays and Wednesdays I
will have coffee on the deck of the Phoenix Grille right after class.  You are welcome to join me.
Lecture: Monday, Wednesday and Friday  1:00-1:50
Discussion Sections and Homework: Discussion sections are vital to the course and stress how to
solve problems.  There will be a 10 to 15 minute  quiz, consisting of one or two problem taken from
the homework,  sometime during most discussion sections.  On a random basis, once or twice during
the quarter, the homework will be collected and certain problems graded. Performance on these quizzes
and graded homework problems will be a part of the basis of your grade.  These quizzes will be closed
book, closed notes. You may use a calculator.  Your lowest quiz/homework score will be dropped.
Required Text: Fundamentals of Physics, Extended 5th Edition, Halliday, Resnick and Walker

Recommended: Student solutions manual to the above text
Prerequisites: Physics 5A; Co-requisite: Math 2C
Discussion Leaders:
Matt Adams;      mcadams@ea.oac.uci.edu;     ext: 6432;      Office hours: Wed, 4-6 PM in FRH 3111
Dirk Pandel;        dpandel@uci.edu;                    ext: 2651;      Office hours: Mon, Wed, 11:30-1 in FRH B145

Grading:     Quizzes: 25%     Midterm: 30%     Final: 45%
Grading  Policy:   The grade you earn will be a combination of how well you do relative to your
classmates and how well you do relative to historical standards. A mean of C+ is typical but not guaranteed.

Makeup Policy: There will be no makeup quizzes, midterm exam or final. Your lowest quiz score will
be dropped. Any proposal to take the midterm at a different time  than specified must be submitted to
the instructor in writing, no later than the end of week 3.  Warning: Any makeup midterm exam may
be of a different format and will probably be harder than the regular one.  If you don't take the midterm
your final will be weighted 75%.  Once you take the midterm you will not have the option of dropping it.

Scoring Errors: The discussion leaders and I, will strive to grade as uniformly and fairly as possible.
Any clerical error in quiz or exam score should be brought directly to the instructor no later than three
days after the work was returned. Updated scores will be posted outside FRH 1134; you are responsible
for promptly reporting any clerical error in your score to the Administrative Assistant in FRH 1130.

Homework/Quizzes: Assignments and due dates are specified below. You should carefully read the
material for each lecture before you attend the lecture. The lectures will cover only the most
essential concepts so you will need to learn independently through reading and solving problems.
Homework and quizzes will be based on material covered in class.

Midterm: This exam is held in lecture on Friday, May 8. You may bring a calculator and a single
8.5x11 inch "cheat sheet". Questions will be drawn from lecture (including demonstrations), reading
assignments and homework problems.  The midterm and final will be multiple choice exams.
You are responsible for providing your own Scantron Form-2052.

Final: This two hour exam is held on Wed., June 17, 1:30-3:30. It will cover all the topics discussed
during the quarter, although a bit more emphasis will be placed on material covered after the midterm;
you may use a calculator and bring a single 8x11 inch "cheat sheet".  The midterm and final will be
multiple choice exams.  You are responsible for providing your own Scantron Form-2052.

Answers/Solutions: Solutions to all quizzes and exams will be posted outside the FRH 1130.

Scores: Graded work will be made available to you as promptly as possible. Graded quizzes will
first be available in discussion sections and later placed in boxes in FRH 1130 (Physics Stockroom).
The midterm will be returned to you in the discussion section. The final exam will be available to you
from the stockroom after June 19. Keep all your graded work and verify your scores are correctly
recorded outside the stockroom. If there is an error immediately contact the Administrative Assistant
in the stockroom.

Read the appropriate sections of the text before the lecture, noting down questions.

Understanding Fundamental principles rather than memorizing specific formulas is the essence of learning.

Attend all the lectures and discussion sections.

Study everyday and don't postpone getting help.

Doing homework assignments and reviewing lecture material is the best preparation for the exams.

Do not limit yourself to assigned problems; do extra problems on your own and understand what the
exams will emphasize.
