SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAMS

Visit EH&S Training and Health Services page to find out about all safety training and health services offered in this campus and how to register for those classes. Different kinds of safety training and health services are listed here with a calendar and a click away to register.

Main training items that will be of interest to the faculty, staff, and students in this school are listed below for your information:

Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) - this course includes useful, up-to-date information on such topics as earthquake preparedness, fire safety, electrical safety, occupational injury prevention, hazard communication and personal security. Every UCI employee is required to go through this core training.

Laboratory Safety & Chemical Hygiene Plan Workshop - this training is designed for all research laboratory workers handling hazardous chemicals.

Radiation Safety Training for Radioactive Materials Users - this training program consists of three elements: initial orientation, on-the-job training, and completion of a six and a half-hour radiation safety seminar. All details are given including date, time, and place for the initial orientation and radiation safety seminar. This site also lists training requirements for the radiation-producing machine users.

Bloodborne Pathogens Standard - employees, especially health care workers, who reasonably anticipate potential contact with human blood or body fluid during the course of their workday are required to receive this training annually.

Hepatitis-B Vaccinations - the Hepatitis B vaccination series is available to employees whose jobs may place them in contact with human blood or other potentially infectious materials of human origin.

The Safety Coordinator of the School of Physical Sciences also provides a monthly laboratory safety orientation for the lab workers of this school. This training will be very helpful for the NEW laboratory workers. Topics like Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) and its implementation, safe laboratory work procedures, physical and health hazards of hazardous materials, hazardous materials and waste labeling and disposal requirements, control measures and chemical spill response etc. will be discussed at length. Slides, Video, and transparencies will be used to point out the lab safety concerns and mitigation procedures. This training is similar to Laboratory Safety & Chemical Hygiene Plan Workshop mentioned above.

Date, time, and place for the safety orientation in this school is sent out electronically to all faculty, staff, and lab contacts who are dealing with hazardous chemicals on monthly basis. There is no need for prior registration to attend this training but you must call or e-mail at least one day in advance to reserve your spot because of limited seating. Contact Rama Singh, ext. 2518 or rpsingh@uci.edu to attend this training.

A Teaching Assistants (TA) training is also organized before the fall quarter begins every year for the first year graduate students of departments of Chemistry and Physics.

Special training sessions like compressed gas safety, laser safety, machine shop safety, forklift safety, ergonomics, etc are organized on regular basis to empower our employees with safe working practices in different specific fields. Contact Rama Singh (rpsingh@uci.edu) if you are interested in having a group safety training session in your area on the topic of your interest.

A safety training tracking form is provided in Appendix M of PS CHP for all supervisors to use for maintaining safety-training records of their employees.

You are also encouraged to borrow safety-related videos and books from the safety office in PS Store to use in your group meetings. You can borrow our TV and VCR set as well if it is not being used. Enquire about videos/TV/VCR/books if you are interested in borrowing them for your group safety meetings.
