We just recieved this e-mail from the SPS at UC Santa Cruz, with some details about the SPS Zone 18 meeting on May 3rd. Everyone is encouraged to go.

My name is James Beacham, and I'm a senior physics major at UC Santa Cruz and the founder and former president of the UCSC chapter of the Society of Physics Students. I'm contacting you to cordially invite you and all the physics majors at your university to the 2008 SPS Zone 18 Meeting, a.k.a. BIG PHYSICS DAY at UCSC, and to ask your help in disseminating some information.

The meeting takes place on May 3rd, 2008, and will be a full day of physics-related stuff. We think that this will be a unique event, part conference (with a keynote address by Nobel Laureate Dr. Martin Perl, an opening address by a UCSC faculty member, and undergraduate research presentations by students from all around the region) and part Regional Physics Geek Gathering (with a Friday, May 2nd, night-time viewing of "Bender's Big Score" on the big screen and a star party after the May 3rd meeting).

We want to make sure that all UCI physics majors know that they are invited, and that, in addition to checking out the attached flyer, we urge them to visit the Big Physics Day at UCSC / Zone Meeting website...

...for more information. If you could possibly distribute the flyer and website URL to all physics majors, we would be immensely grateful.

Thanks again for your help in getting the word out!

Sincerely, James Beacham Zone Meeting / Big Physics Day Ambassador The Society of Physics Students at UCSC

We will be moving from the current SPS room in Rowland Hall to a new room in Frederick Reines Hall by the end of April. The new room will be on the second floor, FRH 2137. If you have keys for the current SPS room, RH 270, you should probably exchange them when we move to the new room.

Since we were unable to get the overhead display to work last time, we will be conducting another lunchtime talk with Dr. Steven Barwick on Thursday, Feb 21st at 1:00 pm. We are planning to hold the talk in Nat Sci II in room 1201. Please check this page again for updates on the room.

We will be having a general meeting on Friday, 3:00pm in FRH 2111. We will be discussing the speaker for the next lunchtime talk, the SPS yearbook, events, the sps library, and the computer representative position. The computer representative will be in charge of managing and setting up the computers when we move the SPS room from Rowland Hall to FRH. I am currently the defacto computer representative, but if anyone is interested in taking up this position, please show up to this upcoming meeting.

The UCI chapter of the Society of Physics Students would like to invite you to our second lunch-time talk of the 2007-08 year this Thursday, February 7th, at 1:00, Room to be announced. Dr. Steven Barwick will be giving a talk entitled "High energy astrophysical neutrinos and the development of multi-messenger astronomy." Lunch will be provided, so please come and enjoy what will be a lecture you won't want to miss.

Here is a abstract for the lecture from Dr. Barwick:

"My research has focused on building new devices to search for neutrino sources in the sky, from AMANDA buried a mile beneath the surface of the South Pole, to ANITA which flew around Antarctica carried by a large balloon to an altitude of 120,000 feet, and ARIANNA, an new concept to measure neutrinos at the very highest energies imaginable. If approved, it will cover a patch of ice on the Ross Ice Shelf on the coast of Antarctica that is 30km x 30km in area. This talk will cover the reasons for the development of large detectors to search for neutrino emission from distant, powerful astronomical sources."

Hope you all can make it.

The new SPS site is here! I don't have much in the way of site content yet, but I have some links in the links section and links with descriptions to resources that you might find helpful on the resources page. I need help with creating content, so if you are interested, please contact me at jcfeng(at)uci.edu. I would like to have a page on careers in physics, and a page on the physics GRE.
