Workshops

Learning Styles

The goal of this workshop will be to study what variables go into student learning. Most of the time will be spent discussing what "learning styles" means and how this information can be used to improve classroom techniques. In the workshop we will-

  • Determine our own learning and teaching styles
  • Brainstorm some useful strategies for reaching out to students with different learning styles
  • Also, we'll talk about campus resources for teaching.

Beforehand, you might want to reflect back on your past classroom experiences, both as an instructor and as a student. What teaching methods or strategies to you fall back on? Are these methods that are best for your learning style or is there some other reason for using these methods? Which teachers were able to help you learn? Did all of your fellow students benefit from this instructor or did some students have a difficult time? (You might also want to head to the library and look at They're Not Dumb They're Different: Stalking the Second Tier by Sheila Tobias. This is a small book that does a fine job of illustrating learning and disciplinary styles in action.)
