**Math Assessment for Physics Placement (MAPP) Test**

The MAPP test is designed to place students into the appropriate beginning Physics course, either Physics 2 (Introduction to Mathematical Methods for Physics) or Physics 7C (Classical Physics). It tests your understanding of mathematical topics critical for success in physics and assesses your preparation for beginning university-level physics. **The test is mandatory and must be completed before you can enroll in one of the above courses.**

*How can I prepare for the MAPP test?*

Start by watching this video, which describes the MAPP test and gives tips on preparation.

You should review your high school mathematics focusing on graphing, vectors and calculus (basic derivatives, integrals and their applications). The physics topics include motion along a line and projectile motion and a few general word problems. You may use a calculator.

*How long is the MAPP test?*

There are 32 multiple-choice questions. You must score 24 or above to enroll in Physics 7C, otherwise you will have to enroll in the preparatory course, Physics 2. Although there is no time limit, you should allow yourself at least **ninety minutes** to complete the test. This exam can only to be taken once.

*How long will it take before I can enroll in the physics course?*

Continuing students: You will be cleared to enroll three (3) working days after completing the test.

**NOTE:** Physics 2 requires concurrent enrollment in Mathematics 2A. Physics 7C requires concurrent enrollment in Physics 7LC and Mathematics 2B. (You must enroll in this order: Physics 7LC, Mathematics 2B and then Physics 7C.) Students who place into Physics 7C eliminate the need to take an extra course, Physics 2.

*Who is exempt?*

If you have both a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Physics Exam C, Part I or II, **and** a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Mathematics AB exam or a score of 3 on the AP Mathematics BC exam, you are exempt from taking the test and may enroll in Physics 7C/7LC.

You should take the MAPP test if you have taken the AP exams but have not received your results by July 15th.
