The Pan Research Group at the University of California, Irvine specializes in atomic-scale characterization and measurement using such techniques as ultra-high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and in-situ microscopy where electrical and chemical experiments are conducted while being imaged in TEM, as well as scanning probe measurements, and other techniques. Our research has applications in electronics, photovoltaics, ferroelectric memories and devices, catalysis, particularly for automotive applications, and lithium battery cathode materials.

Research is conducted in the Pan Lab and at the Irvine Materials Research Institute which houses four high performance TEMs, all equipped with the latest detectors, cameras, and in-situ TEM holders.

Pan Group is also part of the Center for Complex and Active Materials (CCAM), an NSF MERSEC at UCI. Research at the CCAM is focused on creating chemically complex hard materials and bio-inspired dynamic soft materials with superior properties and performance.
