:: AIMS and SCOPE ::

The goal of this conference is to foster communication between scientists, in particular biologists and physicists, interested in the area of magnetic orientation. The highly successful and prestigious Heraeus seminar series and the newly remodeled physics centre in Bad Honnef provide a unique venue for an intensive dialogue, comparable to that of a Gordon Research Conference, but limited to about 55 participants to provide more focus.

Physicists can inform themselves about the most recent biological discoveries regarding magnetic orientation in animals. Biologists can find a critical assessment of common hypotheses as physicists analyze feasibility of various mechanisms with quantitative tools. Recent breakthroughs indicate that the time is ripe for major advances regarding the nature of the receptors and mechanisms underlying magnetoreception in organisms. A critical goal of this conference is therefore to broaden the circle of scientists interested in magnetoreception so as to bring new approaches to the table, including but not limited to neurophysiological, photochemical, molecular biology, genetic, and engineering methods.
