Understanding and distinguishing different phases of matter has been a central topic of condensed matter physics. Landau's theory provides a systematic route to achieve this goal, however, there are exotic phases that fall outside this paradigm.  Quantum magnets offer an excellent playground for exploring various ordered and disordered phases, as well as nontrivial topology.

As a demonstration, I will discuss our recent work on spin liquid phases, topologically nontrivial magnetic excitations, and the Landau theory of altermagnets.

I will use these topics to highlight the power of symmetry analysis in understanding the ground state and dynamical properties of magnetic quantum materials.
