Each physics major will be assigned a faculty advisor for consultation about courses, tracks in the major, career plans, and other topics. First-year students will meet with their advisors once per quarter. Students will receive emails from the Department and from their faculty advisors about setting up advising appointments.
Each Spring quarter, physics majors (other than graduating seniors) will meet with their faculty advisors to evaluate their progress and plan courses for the next academic year. Spring advising is mandatory for all non-graduating Physics majors. The Physics Student Affairs Office will email all undergraduates about planning these advising meetings. It is very important that students should meet with their faculty advisors before the assigned deadline. The Department will place a hold on a student's record until advising is completed, meaning that students will be unable to register for fall courses until the advising meetings are held.
Make sure to carefully read all emails sent to you from the Physics Undergraduate Affairs office. These emails contain important information about the advising process and registering for courses.
Here is how the Spring advising process works:
Students contact their advisors to schedule an appointment during the assigned period.
Students submit a pre-advising survey (with their physics and math grades and other information) on EEE (https://eee.uci.edu/survey/pre-advising_survey) before they meet with their advisor.
Before the advising meeting, students create a study plan for the following Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.
This plan should be discussed and finalized during the meeting with the student’s advisor.
Students submit the study plan survey on EEE (https://eee.uci.edu/survey/Study_Plan) after the meeting with their full study plan.
Advisors indicate through a EEE survey whether Spring advising has been satisfactorily completed for each advisee. Without advisor approval, Physics student affairs office will not remove the hold on student record.
Physics student affairs office removes the hold on the student’s record once the student has completed his/her survey and the faculty advisor has indicated that advising has been satisfactorily completed.
The Department will assign each first-year Physics major a faculty advisor. Sophomores who have not yet selected a track will continue to meet with their freshman-year advisor. After selecting a track in the major, students will meet with their track advisors.
Track advisors are listed on the Tracks and Concentrations page.
