PHYSICS COURSE INFORMATION
Math Assessment for Physics Placement (MAPP) Test
The MAPP test is designed to place students into the appropriate beginning Physics course, either Physics 2 (Introduction to Mathematical Methods for Physics) or Physics 7C (Classical Physics). It tests your understanding of mathematical topics critical for success in physics and assesses your preparation for beginning university-level physics. The test is mandatory and must be completed before you can enroll in one of the above courses. Please visit http://physics.uci.edu/mapp for more information.
Physics 3A is now offered every quarter. The first sequence offers 3A in the Fall, 3B in the Winter, and 3C in the Spring, with two lecture sections in each quarter. The second sequence offers 3A in the Winter, 3B in the Spring, and 3C in the Fall, with one lecture section in each quarter. The third sequence offers 3A in Spring, with 3B in Summer and 3C in Fall, with one lecture section in each quarter.
The majority of the 3LB sections will now be offered in Winter Quarter, and the majority of the 3LC sections will be offered in Fall Quarter.
All prerequisites are strictly enforced. Students who have not successfully completed the required prerequisite for a course with a grade of D or better may not continue in the sequence. The list of prerequisite courses can be found at the Registrar's course prerequisites
page or in the UCI General Catalogue
NOTES ON DISCUSSION SECTIONS
Attendance in your assigned discussion section is MANDATORY
throughout the quarter. No quizzes or exams will be graded for students who do not attend their assigned sections. Enrollment in lecture and discussion is required. Most sections fill to capacity so students should plan their schedules carefully and enroll as early as possible using WebReg
. See above for information on how to add/drop a discussion section.
NOTES ON LABORATORY SECTIONS
Attendance is required Week 1, beginning MONDAY
. Attendance in your assigned laboratory section is MANDATORY
throughout the quarter. Students will be allowed to participate in their assigned sections only. Most sections fill to capacity so students should plan their schedules carefully and enroll as early as possible using WebReg
. See above for information on how to add/drop a laboratory section.
Lab manuals for Physics 3LB-LC, 7LC-LD and 52A-B-C are available at the UCI Bookstore. Courses 3LB-LC and 52A-B-C also require the use of 5 blue books (grid) which must be purchased prior to WEEK ONE at the UCI Bookstore.
LAB FEES: Students of Physics 3LB, 3LC, 7LC, 7LD, 52A-B-C, 120, 121 and 206 will be charged a $25.00 lab fee. The charges for these classes will be added to your ZOT Bill Week 1 of the quarter. These charges will be posted Week 3 if you add a Physics lab after week 1. The last day to add a lab is Friday (end of Week 2). Students who drop a Physics lab course no later than Friday, (end of Week 2) may have the fee reversed. In order to reverse the lab fee, students must bring proof of the drop date and their student ID card to the Physics Student Affairs Office (FRH 4109, hrs 9-12 noon M-F).
