ABSTRACT:
The nature of dark matter is one of the fundamental questions in physics today. Direct detection experiments search for evidence of dark matter particle scattering in low-threshold, low-background terrestrial detectors. This endeavor has driven decades of new particle detector development at the low-energy frontier. This talk will review the current status of and prospects, with emphasis on new directions in detector development: strategies for reaching beyond the neutrino bound, and measuring the dark matter wind.
