"Supernovae in the Synoptic Survey Era"

 

 

 

Synoptic optical surveys have made exciting discoveries of new or rare types of supernovae in the past decade, but how can we prepare ourselves for the opportunities and challenges brought by future surveys such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope? I will present two ongoing programs, the SkyMapper Supernova Search in low-redshift and the Dark Energy Survey supernova search in high-redshift, both expected to deliver high precision dataset for next generation cosmology studies. I will use them as examples to discuss how we might use intelligent machine learning algorithms to efficiently discover and identify interesting transients, and how to optimize the allocation of spectroscopic resources, crucial for follow-up studies.
