Abstract:
The research on ultrafast-laser-based photonics fabrication and integration is highly interdisciplinary, intersecting applied physics, photonics, lasers, materials, precision controls, and imaging.  The first part of the talk presents computational models, systems and physical processes on using ultrafast lasers to fabricate photonic devices and/or optical components, and the associated applications. The second part of the talk presents a new optical differentiation wavefront sensing technique based on far-field spatial modulation using a binary pixelated filter to introduce a linear amplitude transmission. This sensor is expected to offer phase measurement with higher spatial resolution, higher dynamic range and higher signal-to-noise ratio for astronomy, surface metrology, vision correction and phase imaging for biological cells. The last part of the talk focuses on coherent phasing of large-aperture optics and the realization of a 1.5-meter scale grating with three coherently phased segments, the design of deformable gratings for generating kilojoule, petawatt laser pulses and for creating next-generation multiple-meter-scale telescopes.

Biographic Sketch:
Jie Qiao is currently an Associate Professor in the Carlson Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She leads the Advanced Optical Fabrication, Instrumentation & Metrology Laboratory where her team works on ultrafast-lasers for advanced photonics / optics fabrication, optical metrology, and instrumentation. Prior to joining RIT, she was a laser system scientist at the Department-of-Energy-funded Laboratory for Laser Energetics, University of Rochester from 2005 to 2013. She has conceived an interferometric grating-tiling technique and led the demonstration of the world’s first 1.5-meter coherently-phased-grating pulse compressor. Dr. Qiao has worked on various innovative photonics devices, optical imaging and metrology systems, for two photonic startups and one optics company. Dr. Qiao earned her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 and her M.S. in Precision Instruments and Fine Mechanics from Tsinghua University in 1997. She has an M.B.A from the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester, concentrating in entrepreneurship, strategy, finance and marketing. Dr. Qiao founded Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Entrepreneurship (WiSTEE) Connect in 2013, for which she is serving as the Chair. She is an associate editor for the OSA journal Optics Express.
