Abstract:

Light dark matter interacting in a crystal or fluid must scatter off a collective excitation (phonon) rather than off individual nuclei. I will set up the appropriate low energy effective theory and show how to calculate the dark matter scattering rate for various dark matter models and target materials. This framework will be essential to interpret the results of the next generation of low threshold dark matter detectors.
