Abstract:
It has long been known that magnetization can be used to control electric current in magnetic conductors. I will describe our recent discovery of a reciprocal effect: electric current in a magnetic conductor can alter the state of its magnetization via relativistic quantum interactions. This finding is an important step towards building a comprehensive picture of spin-charge coupling in magnetic materials. Relevant concepts in spintronics will be introduced and practical applications will be discussed.
