Abstract:
The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 marked a major milestone in our understanding of the universe, and a watershed for particle physics as a discipline. What's known about particles and fields now forms a nearly complete short story, a spectacular, counterintuitive tale of relativity and quantum physics, with the Higgs field at its center. But it sits within a larger narrative that is full of unanswered questions concerning the nature of spacetime and its many fields, with no clear path as to how to answer them. I'll present this scientific story using a novel approach, hoping to make it more accessible to other scientists, to students and to the public.
