Abstract: I will discuss some aspects of general relativity in a finite patch of spacetime, including recent results by mathematicians about the well-posedness of such systems. I will then explain why their proposal for well-posed boundary conditions is particularly exciting for those interested in quantum gravity. I'll explain some calculations with these boundary conditions and compare the results to the predictions of thermal effective field theory.
