Resonance

Resonance circles: peer mentoring for incoming undergraduates

Resonance is a program in the Department of Physics & Astronomy in which small groups of incoming students meet with continuing physics majors who serve as mentors. The goal of the program is to provide community among physics and applied physics students, build excitement about physics, and help students navigate challenges of the first year.  Resonance’s eventual aim is to realize a vertical mentoring system in which everyone in the department -- undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and faculty alike -- both serve as mentors and are mentored themselves, creating interconnections and community at all stages of academia. Meet our Resonance fellows below, or view our curriculum.

Henry Amir
Junior from San Luis Obispo, CA

Major: Physics and math

Plans after UCI: Graduate school

Involved in: Society of Physics Students president, biophysics research, peer tutor / learning assistant

I'm a junior majoring in physics and math, with an emphasis in biomathematics. I chose biophysics because I believe that long standing problems need new, innovative solutions. I go to the movie theater a lot!

Danny Attiyah

Junior from Upland, CA

Major: Applied physics

Plans after UCI: Graduate school

Involved in: UC LEADS prof. development, research with Dr. Franklin Dollar, Phy. Sci. undergrad mentoring, STRIDE

I am a junior in applied physics currently doing research in laser and plasma physics, exploring interactions at extremely high power levels. I am an advisor for learning assistants in the CLAP program here at UCI. In my free time, I like to play soccer or basketball at the ARC.

Kyle Callahan

Junior from Santa Clarita, CA

Major: Physics

Plans after UCI: Graduate school

Involved in: UCI Boxing Club, UCI Mindfulness Club, Atomspheric Chemistry and Plasma Physics Research

Murong Cheng

Junior from China

Major: Physics

Plans after UCI: Graduate school

I’m a junior majoring in Physics. My current interest is in astrophysics and this year I plan to do some research in astrophysics. In my spare time I often listen to some music especially 90’s britpop. Sometimes I go to gigs as well.

Melanie Dachauer

Senior from San Mateo, CA

Major: Physics with secondary teaching credentials

Plans after UCI: High school physics teacher

Involved in: Tau Sigma transfer honor society, Society of Physics Students, Math CEO after-school tutoring

I'm a senior majoring in physics with a concentration in secondary education. My goal is to be a high school physics teacher. My hobbies are cooking, drawing, and swimming.

Marlon Hettick

Senior from Oceanside, CA

Major: Physics with secondary teaching credentials

Plans after UCI: High school physics teacher

I'm a 4th year physics major in the Calteach program, which means that I am going to be a physics teacher. I am a musician at heart, I love to play trumpet and listen to jazz and classical music.

Wenjie Huang

Senior from Guangdong, China

Major: Physics, math, and economics

Plans after UCI: Graduate school

Involved in: ATLAS research collaboration, CLAP advisor

I'm a third-year student who often has much energy in learning new things. I like to see things in different perspectives and combine knowledge from different subjects for metacognitive process related to learning and thinking. I either read books at coffeeshop or play games at my apartment in spare time.

Erny Juarez

Senior from Moreno Valley, CA

Major: Physics with astrophysics specialization

Plans after UCI: Work for a year, graduate school

Involved in: Peer tutor program

I'm a senior majoring in physics with specialization in astrophysics and have always loved sci-fi films/books. I would love to be a part of researching high energy objects and enjoy to be active/exercise in my off time, as well as gaming!
