ABSTRACT:
Recent experimental evidence for a possible excess in Higgs decays to two photons and for a possible gamma ray line in Fermi-LAT data have tantalized the particle physics community. Both could hint at new charged particles with a mass at the weak scale. I will discuss some hurdles that such models have to pass. Explanations of Higgs decays often have difficulty with vacuum stability and EDM constraints. New charged particles coupling to both the Higgs and to dark matter are typically in tension with XENON100 limits. These difficulties dampen, but don't kill, hopes that the data points to light charged particles. I will briefly discuss a scenario in which the Fermi-LAT line could be evidence of dark matter, but where no new charged particles are needed at the weak scale.
