Nearly fifty years ago, theorists boldly predicted that the existence of a field permeating the universe and giving energy to the vacuum could explain why fundamental particles have mass. Numerous precision measurements over the past decades indirectly support the existence of this field; however, one crucial prediction of this concept has remained unconfirmed: the existence of a massive particle, the Standard Model Higgs boson. The ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN laboratory have observed the production of a new particle with mass 125-126 GeV and with decay properties consistent with those expected of the Standard Model Higgs boson.
