SELF-ASSESSMENT TEST FOR PHYSICS 2 / PHYSICS 7C

Students considering enrollment in Physics 2 or Physics 7C should take a self-assessment text available at the Physics Placement Test webpage of UCI's Academic Testing Center:

https://testingcenter.uci.edu/programs/placement-testing/physics/

If a student can fairly easily answer at least 75% of the questions with a calculator, but no other help, then the student is ready to take Physics 7C and should enroll in it if they completed one year of high school physics. If a student scores below 75% of the questions, then the student should enroll in Physics 2.

Topics Covered in the self-assessment test:

·Units, Significant figures

·Simple word problems: Translate words and information into equations

·Basic Calculus -- Differentiation and Simple integration, know your functions (graph them, find the slopes, find maxima and minima on the graph and using derivatives)

·Vectors -- represent them on a graph, know how to add, subtract and multiply them -- basically as comfortable with them as you are with numbers!

·1-D and 2-D kinematics -- understand and be able to solve problems involving objects moving in line or a plane under constant acceleration.

PHYSICS 3, PHYSICS 3LB AND 3LC:

PHYSICS 3:
Physics 3A is now offered every quarter. The first sequence offers 3A in the Fall, 3B in the Winter, and 3C in the Spring, with two lecture sections in each quarter. The second sequence offers 3A in the Winter, 3B in the Spring, and 3C in the Fall, with one lecture section in each quarter. The third sequence offers 3A in Spring, with 3B in Summer and 3C in Fall, with one lecture section in each quarter.

PHYSICS 3LB/3LC:
The majority of the 3LB sections will now be offered in Winter Quarter, and the majority of the 3LC sections will be offered in Fall Quarter.

***The SENIOR ONLY restriction will be lifted on the first day of quarter, when the Instruction begins, at 12:00 noon.

NOTES ON PREREQUISITES

All prerequisites are strictly enforced. Students who have not successfully completed the required prerequisite for a course with a grade of D or better may not continue in the sequence. The list of prerequisite courses can be found at the Registrar's course prerequisites page or in the UCI General Catalogue.

NOTES ON DISCUSSION SECTIONS

Attendance in your assigned discussion section is MANDATORY throughout the quarter. No quizzes or exams will be graded for students who do not attend their assigned sections. Enrollment in lecture and discussion is required. Most sections fill to capacity so students should plan their schedules carefully and enroll as early as possible using WebReg. See above for information on how to add/drop a discussion section.

NOTES ON  LABORATORY SECTIONS

Attendance is required Week 1. Attendance in your assigned laboratory section is MANDATORY throughout the quarter. Students will be allowed to participate in their assigned sections only. Most sections fill to capacity so students should plan their schedules carefully and enroll as early as possible using WebReg. See above for information on how to add/drop a laboratory section.

Lab manuals for Physics 3LB-LC, 7LD and 52A-B-C are available at the UCI Bookstore. Courses 3LB-LC and 52A-B-C also require the use of 5 blue books (grid) which must be purchased prior to WEEK ONE at the UCI Bookstore.

LAB FEES: Students of Physics 3LB-LC, 7LD, 52A-B-C, 120, 121 and 206 will be charged a $25.00 lab fee. The charges for these classes will be added to your ZOT Bill Week 1 of the quarter. These charges will be posted Week 3 if you add a Physics lab after week 1. The last day to add a lab is Friday, the end of week 2. Lab fees are non-refundable.

FINAL EXAM PICK-UP

Students may pick up their final exams the first three weeks of the quater (Monday to Friday). The location is FRH 4109. The hours are 9 am - 12 noon & 1 - 3 pm. UCI photo ID is required to pick up exams. After Week 1, the exams will reside in FRH 4109 until Week 3.
