New UCI Center for 2D Materials Research

2-dimensional materials confine electrons to layers only a few atoms thick, leading to unique quantum properties.  They also have great potential as the basis for novel electronic, magnetic and optical devices.

UCI is greatly expanding its research efforts in this exciting new field with the formation of the UCI Center for 2D Materials Research and the hiring of two new faculty in the area of condensed matter experiments: Luis Jauregui and Javier Sanchez-Yamagishi.  The center will provide shared-use equipment for the nanofabrication and characterization of complex 2D materials heterostructures.  The center will also bring together researchers from different groups focused on 2D materials, including the groups of Luis Jauregui, Javier Sanchez-Yamagishi, Jing Xia, Ilya Krivorotov, Ruqian Wu, and Xiaoqing Pan.
