Abstract:

Here at UCI we are blessed to be part of a community that takes the safety and well being of its students seriously, including those marginalized as a result of their identity. In this talk on LBGTQ+ allyship in the classroom, we plan to take a specific and in depth look at the ways in which Professors and TAs in our department can be compassionate allies to their queer students. We will cover topics such as "What does it mean to be an ally?" and "Why diversity matters in the classroom" as well as basic terminology, opportunities for conversation practice, and much more! Our intention is to create an inclusive and safe environment in which questions are welcome. If you are someone who feels confused by the rhetoric surrounding inclusion of the queer community and/or if you're looking for more information on how allyship can be implemented in a classroom setting and why it's important to do so, this talk is for you! By joining us, you will be helping to make our department a safer and more welcoming place for all of its students.
